Since childhood, the artist loved horses. He loved living in the country where he could see horses on every road and street. His neighbour had a horse, and this could be an ‘abstract’ type of painting of her horse. (See painting Horse and Lady in this section.) It’s an interesting painting.
Reddish violet and complementary yellow mixes are the colours of choice for this horse’s head. The adjacent, light blue colour on the right of the painting appears to be part of the horse’s body. The discordant combination of colours of the horse’s head and the light blue colour, seem to unsettle the balance of the painting. However, the horse may just be wearing a colourful blanket. (Blue is a predominant colour in Horse and Lady.)
The painting has further cerebral impact on the viewer because of the horse’s malformed nose, mouth, out of balance eyes and cropped ears. The horse’s head takes up most of the canvas and is tipped slightly, and seems to have a questioning expression.
Acrylic on Masonite, date unknown, probably late career. (Cleaned and framed.)
