In this uncomplicated, harmonious painting, a woman’s porcelain, feminine features are outlined by the well placed, heart shaped neckline of her gown. The fish-like object defining her waistline, further emphasizes her femininity.

The artist’s choice of the negative or passive, (yet strong in value), blue colour of the woman’s dress, according to Goethe, a poet and scholar, indicates a passionate and tender frame of mind. Perhaps the artist viewed his subject in this manner? Note the artist’s use of brightly coloured lips and another ‘cool’ colour, green.
