The artist thoughtfully structured this clever, colour-related, semi-abstract painting. It has some connection with reality and has good energy. There is interaction, not just between the artist in the picture and the subject on her canvas, but also between her and you, the viewer. It is as if the artist at work in the picture is standing back to ask, ‘What do you think?’
Shape and colour harmony were created by using an analogous colour palette, i.e. colours side by side on the colour wheel. Dominant red colours are supported by orange and yellow colours, and the painting is accented with white light.
Meanwhile, the artist used intense, dark blue and a variety of coloured strokes with different values to provide contrast and an interesting backdrop.
The artist obviously enjoyed painting this picture.
Acrylic on Masonite, 1980s.
