Lush Farm (27 x 21.5 cm)

Buildings in the distance, contented cows, water in the creek, lush grass – it’s the Australian farmer’s dream!

Yellow-green has been used as the mother colour in this landscape painting. Yellow is the colour of joy and hope in Western society, and it adds energy to a painting. Green is the colour of nature, the environment, spring and renewal. Short, angled and crisscrossing brush strokes, representing grass, dance all over the lower half of the canvas suggesting it is quite a breezy day. The layering of colour gives the painting a textured feel.

An effect of atmospheric perspective or visual depth has been achieved, because the artist used softly tinted and blended sky colours. They contrast with the stronger coloured foreground. Horizontal layers of colour that blur into each other divide the painting into sections, and this also assists with perspective.

The painting has been roughly broken into thirds, both horizontally and vertically, and the contented cow has been placed as central focus for easy viewing.

The mood is a happy one, as opposed to what it would be like if this scene was painted during an Australian drought.

Acrylic on Masonite, date unknown. (Cleaned and framed.)
